RUWI
The first financial district of Muscat developed in the 1970s, Ruwi has suffered from neglect due to the emergence of new developments. However, rather than resorting to extending the city, the VMX plan proposes a sustainable approach that emphasizes preserving the district’s existing structures and implementing green spaces, renewable energy, pedestrian-friendly streets, public transport, and smart technologies.
Moreover, the plan also addresses the restructuring of street hierarchies and the accessibility of different plots, reducing the number of streets to make room for more public spaces and greenery. This reconfiguration creates a balanced and resilient mixed-use area that combines both working and living spaces with necessary facilities.
By prioritizing sustainability, the VMX plan serves as a model for future urban development in Oman. The plan offers a unique opportunity to showcase the potential of sustainable urban development while emphasizing the importance of preserving heritage and culture.
