WE ARE VMX ARCHITECTS
“We design and build attractive spaces for people. As socially committed architects, our mission is to improve the built environment and thus, quality of life. In all our projects we focus on the users and facilitate interaction between people, thereby helping to create healthy communities.
Our buildings communicate clearly with their users and surroundings. Together with our clients and advisors, we realise architecture that gives meaning, defines identity, instills pride and enhances solidarity. While the striking features of our designs are usually easy to recognise, their aesthetic qualities often reveal themselves particuarly in the second instance.
VMX Architects is an internationally operating, prize-winning office founded in 1994 in Amsterdam. Our work ranges from the typically Dutch bike shed to a VIP terminal at Schiphol Airport, and from social housing to university buildings in Shanghai. Our social commitment is reflected in our frequent lectures, our contribution to education, our participation on advisory councils and juries, and our summer school."
THe team
We work with an international team of architects, whose diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise contribute to the creation of innovatory, unexpected, unique designs and skilfully realised buildings. Our working method is characterised by a horizontal organisation and personal approach, with an emphasis on close collaboration with the client, users and experts from other disciplines.

VMX?
Originally known as VMG, named after its founding partners Murphy, Veenendaal, and De Graaf, the architecture firm underwent a significant transformation following the departure of Reiner de Graaf, who left to join the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). With De Graaf's exit, the "G" was symbolically crossed out, and the firm was rebranded as VMX. Read more about it in VMX AGENDA.
VMX AGENDA is a compelling book published in 2007, chronicling the journey of VMX Architects from 1994 to 2006. This candid and unflinching narrative offers an insider's view into the architectural practice, exploring our working methods in the starting years, joys, frustrations, and the context that shaped our evolution.
… i’m never happy
Don Murphy takes you on a small tour to some of our projects in Amsterdam. To all surprise the movie was made by the German brand Falke for their online magazine in 2014.
VMX EDUCATION
Over the years, VMX Architects has been an active participant in the architectural community, contributing significantly through various channels. We have been honored with invitations to deliver lectures and participate in prestigious exhibitions worldwide. These opportunities have allowed us to share our insights and innovations with a broader audience, enriching the global dialogue on architecture.
In addition to these engagements, VMX Architects has taken proactive steps to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of architecture among students. We have initiated numerous workshops designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. These workshops provide aspiring architects with hands-on experience and direct interaction with seasoned professionals, nurturing their passion and skills.
Our commitment extends beyond education; we see it as our duty to promote the exchange of knowledge and cultural perspectives within the field of architecture. By doing so, we aim to inspire the next generation of architects and contribute to the continuous evolution of architectural practice.
