My time at VMX
“ I have had the opportunity to work at VMX architects as intern for 3 months. Though I have not started my studies in Architecture yet, I have been very pleased with this experience! The team has made me participate very actively in many different projects, which has allowed me to work on various skills. I got to design parts of projects, choose materials, make 3D models and take renderings, as well as making presentations and foam models. I have appreciated the team work and the work environment in the office, everyone has always been very friendly and supportive.”

THE PULSE
Our first development in Zuidas Amsterdam, stands as an exceptional example of sustainable architecture that enhances the urban landscape while also becoming a vibrant destination in its own right. Boasting a plethora of enticing features, including a diverse range of restaurants and a state-of-the-art cinema, Zuidas Amsterdam significantly contributes to the burgeoning nightlife scene of the area. The Pulse is a combination of a 36,000 m2 office building and a 14,000 m2 residential tower and about 5000 m2 public program. Moreover, to support eco-friendly transportation, the development provides a fleet of 140 parking spaces exclusively for electric shared cars.

With sadness, today we say farewell to Ed Veenendaal.
25 Years ago, Ed worked together with us to form VMX Architects. After a short time, he stepped away and focussed on his other interests - remaining a friend, mentor, and a foundational part of our story - as the ‘V’ in VMX.
Ed was a real character: warm, spirited, a tremendous businessman and a tough negotiator. He was a man of great style and substance - and we will miss him dearly.

“…ECHTE ROTTERDAMMER! ”
After almost 7 years since starting the project in 2016 with the competition, we're happy to share that our "Katendrecht" development in Rotterdam is nearing completion. Together with the client we worked tirelessly to create an architecture that pays tribute to the rich history and character of the area. Using robust concrete and industrial materials, we've carefully crafted a design that embodies the spirit of Katendrecht.
The urban setting features a variety of typologies, creating a dynamic and diverse project that offers a dual scale experience. From the south-facing waterfront, visitors will be greeted by striking, bold building that make a strong statement. Meanwhile, the lower-scale family homes on the north side take the scale of existing buildings, maintaining the scale of the neighborhood.

"The special thing about VMX is that they never make anything normal"
Nice publication about our school on Ijburg, thanks to Jan van Erven Dorens.
Read here the translation:
“ I once took a workshop on Building Typology at university. You learned why a school looks like a school and why a town hall looks like a town hall. Looking back, I wonder why I signed up for this workshop. Which ambitious young architect wants to design a building that looks like something typical? However, I did gain something from this course. I can recognize a school building from a kilometer away, both in my home country and abroad. You can recognize a school building from a regular series of large windows, roughly the length of a classroom. The windows start high above the ground, well above table height, so that the students cannot easily look outside and become distracted. The windows are high because classrooms are high and need a lot of daylight. Furthermore, a school has a recognizable, prominent entrance with wide doors so that students can flow in and out in large numbers.
The Montessori Steigereiland school in Ijburg does not meet any of these characteristics. It actually looks more like a factory hall or a sports hall than a school. Architect Don Murphy of VMX Architects clearly made an effort to avoid the typical characteristics of a school. The special thing about VMX is that they never make anything ordinary. The building has the shape of a wave, like a wave on the sea, in a blue color like a child's drawing of water. Ijburg has a lot of water, so I understand how VMX came up with the idea. The elongated, low-rise building consists of a ground floor and a first floor. All the classrooms are located on the first floor. The first floor has different levels that flow smoothly into each other and create the shape of the wave. The first floor protrudes several meters from the front and forms a wavy canopy over the entire length of the building.
A long, undulating strip of windows captures the light for all the classrooms facing the front. It's a cool and original building that captures the imagination of children. Fun for the child, and just because of that, fun for the parents too. I have warm feelings for the school where our children went. It's located a few hundred meters from our house. Every morning around half past eight, a stream of children starts flowing past our window on their way to school. They walk obediently holding their parents' hands, with backpacks on, looking down at the ground. In the afternoon, the stream flows in the opposite direction. The children are then excited, running and jumping and chatting away. It's like a perpetual motion machine, the heartbeat of the neighborhood, constantly fed by new residents and new children. Without the school, it would be very boring here.”
