Winning Competition! The city of Amsterdam has selected 'De Puls', designed by VMX ARCHITECTS, MVSA, and DELVA, as the winning concept in the selection procedure for a new building of approximately 56,000 m2 on the still undeveloped site adjacent to the A10 on the new square of the Zuidas train station, Amsterdam.⠀
De Puls is a high-quality, circular building, a place where people live, learn, work, relax. De Puls is completely self-sufficient and is an icon for quality of life. The municipality of Amsterdam has set high standards for the quality of the homes, circularity, sustainability, urban nature, mobility and public facilities. This ambitious proposal delivers on these requirements. The design is being further developed and the completion of the complex is planned for 2023.⠀
‘The Diagonal’ defines the future urban context, and the form of De Puls responds accordingly. Both towers and street break with the existing checkerboard pattern of the ‘southern axis’ . Typically generating rectangular towers, this new shift leads to sharper angles, slender volumes and the opportunity for new perspectives.
The plinth forms connections : the diagonal to the canal, working with living, and individuality with collectivity. An uninterrupted space that adapts to the diversity of its users. Cinema, exhibitions, introduction, meeting, activity, indoor and outdoor rooms. A "blurring zone" for informal encounters, and scheduled meetings.
"Somewhere & Anywhere"
De Puls houses the essence of metropolis and international appeal; the "Anywhere" factor that makes the Zuidas locally distinctive. Meanwhile at the global scale - an identity of specific local qualities, diversity and recognisability. This "Somewhere" factor applied in the Zuidas bind ‘de Puls’ to the narrative of Amsterdam. The 20th Century ‘Amsterdam School’ movement, characterised by a powerful design language, by rich details and materialisation, sets out the aesthetic inspiration for the residential component of de Puls. Here, we deploy a playful brick facade, and expressive bay windows that stack and stagger: our version of a "typical Amsterdam residential tower".
