"WE ARE VMX ARCHITECTS,
WE DESIGN AND BUILD ATTRACTIVE SPACES FOR PEOPLE. AS SOCIALLY COMMITTED ARCHITECTS, OUR MISSION IS TO IMPROVE THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND THUS THE QUALITY OF LIFE.
IN ALL OUR PROJECTS WE FOCUS ON THE USERS AND FACILITATE INTERACTION BETWEEN PEOPLE, THEREBY HELPING TO CREATE HEALTHY COMMUNITIES. OUR BUILDINGS THEREFORE COMMUNICATE CLEARLY WITH THEIR USERS AND WITH THE SURROUNDINGS.
TOGETHER WITH OUR CLIENTS AND ADVISORS, WE REALISE ARCHITECTURE THAT GIVES MEANING, DEFINES IDENTITY, INSTILS PRIDE AND ENHANCES SOLIDARITY. WHILE THE STRIKING FEATURES OF OUR DESIGNS ARE USUALLY EASY TO RECOGNISE, THEIR AESTHETIC QUALITIES OFTEN REVEAL THEMSELVES ONLY IN THE SECOND INSTANCE.
VMX ARCHITECTS IS AN INTERNATIONALLY OPERATING, PRIZE-WINNING OFFICE FOUNDED IN 1995 IN AMSTERDAM. OUR WORK RANGES FROM THE TYPICALLY DUTCH BIKE SHED TO A VIP TERMINAL AT SCHIPHOL AIRPORT, AND FROM SOCIAL HOUSING TO UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS IN SHANGHAI. OUR SOCIAL COMMITMENT IS REFLECTED IN OUR FREQUENT LECTURES, OUR CONTRIBUTION TO EDUCATION, OUR PARTICIPATION ON ADVISORY COUNCILS AND JURIES, AND OUR SUMMER SCHOOL.”
We work with an international team of architects, whose diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise contribute to the creation of innovatory, unexpected, unique designs and skilfully realised buildings. Our working method is characterised by a horizontal organisation and personal approach, with an emphasis on close collaboration with the client, users and experts from other disciplines.
Syria - the making of the future
VMX hosted a workshop at W.A.ve. 2017 in Venice. In general W.A.Ve. 2017 was an opportunity to focus the attention of the global architectural culture on the urbicide of Syrian cities and fully reaffirm the membership of the country in the cultural heritage of humanity and the cosmopolitan responsibility for its reconstruction.
Thinking City foundation
With the ambition to develop a new educational format that is strongly connected to the city, Don Murphy initiated the Thinking City Summer School. In the form of a two-week program, the summer school approaches contemporary urban issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. By working on topical case studies, in close collaboration with local stakeholders, participants with a background in architecture, planning, arts, social sciences and other disciplines jointly work on globally relevant challenges. A complementary public lecture program opens the summer school to a broad audience, thereby making it a true event for the city.
After two successful summer schools in 2014 and 2015 in Amsterdam, building on the strong Dutch tradition of planning and design, Foundation Thinking City currently explores international collaborations for upcoming editions.
is a book published in 2007 about VMX Architects from 1994 to 2006. Honest and confrontational, a look behind the scenes at an architectural practice, working methods, joys and frustrations and a context that produced it all.
