For the development of 200 new dwellings and a new bridge in the dynamic neighbourhood of Katendrecht, we propose a design approach aimed at diversity, of spaces, people and activities, that is strongly grounded in the city’s DNA.
The unique location in the port, where the vastness of the harbour goes together with intimate green spaces at the centre of the neighbourhood, formed an important starting point for the project. To further define essential qualities of the block, successful buildings and public spaces in Rotterdam have been taken as initial building blocks for the project. As a result, a great variety of housing types offer space to a diversity of residents and lifestyles. A collection of outdoor spaces, ranging from an enclosed garden at the centre of the block to decks for recreation along the water, is designed to invite appropriation and interaction between the different users. Also the new pedestrian bridge is envisioned as an attractive public space above the water.
