Emmaüs Institute

For the integration of all levels of secondary education in one complex, the required additional building volume is designed to form a new centre, linking all existing building parts. An important quality of the existing campus in Aalter is the rational spatial layout, with two spacious courtyards. Rather than placing the extension at the rear corner of the site, adding to the collection of separate building structures and consuming a large part of one of the courtyards, an approach of precise interweaving has been chosen. Embedded in between the present volumes, the new part of the school not only unites the community, it also creates a new appealing entrance to the building.
